Putting Music from Amarok 2 on the iPod Touch

February 10th, 2010

In case I ever forget this again, I’m posting these instructions here.  It’s actually really easy.

  • Install OpenSSH from Cydia
  • Mount the iPod’s filesystem: mkdir -p ~/touch && sshfs -o allow_other root@192.168.1.7:/ ~/touch/
  • Then, in Amarok 2, go to the collection browser, and find all the songs that match your criteria (I use ratings):

  • Highlight them and right-click drag them into the Dolphin/Nautilus window showing the directory ~/touch/private/var/mobile/Media/Music/
  • You may have to create the above directory.
  • When you drop them, choose Copy. Then, wait, and they’ll all copy over the wireless to the device. It’s awesome.
  • Get PwnPlayer from Cydia and enjoy!

Rowan LeCompte is awesome

April 11th, 2009

While waking up this Saturday morning, I heard one of the best interviews I’ve ever listened to on NPR.  Rowan LeCompte, a stained glass artist who has contributed greatly to the Washington National Cathedral, is interestingly agnostic.  His explanation of a philosophy of kindness is wonderful.  Have a listen. (Start at 3:55 if you’re short on time)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Classical Rickrolling

September 9th, 2008

Sometimes, I want to hear classical music, but it helps if I can relate to the music being played and really get into it (see: John Williams). Walt Ribeiro recently has awoken me to some awesome arrangements like Pork and Beans and The RickRoll Song that he has produced. You should buy them here if you like them, as I did. Here are some nice samples:

Actually, truth be told, I bought Pork and Beans, and Walt was cool enough to notice and send me Never Gonna Give You Up for free! Please spend money on him!

Amie Street Review: The best music store ever

March 7th, 2007

I’ve decided Amie Street is the best idea in music shopping for a long time.

  • Artists post there songs there, which are downloadable for free
  • As more people download them, their cost increases.
  • If they get really popular, they go up to 99 cents, but no higher.
  • The artist collects 70% of the money the songs earn!
  • Barenaked Ladies just released their new album there, which I bought within about 3 minutes getting an account.

It’s easy. You just put in your billing info, and get direct credit for your money. I put in $25, which was enough to but the whole album and then some. The album cost me $14.30, which means about $10 went directly to Barenaked Ladies instead of $1. I hope this catches on and completely replaces CDs and Record Companies.

3 Thumbs Up!
