So, ZFS is cool. OpenSolaris derivatives are cool. RAID-Z is cool. But it lacks one simple feature that other software RAID solutions handle – the ability to grow a volume by increasing the stripe size. For instance, let’s just postulate that you have 3 2TB hard disks in a RAID-5, and you want to add 2 more to make a 5-disk volume. Well, with ZFS, you have 2 options:

Back up everything on the current volume, destroy it, and create a 5-drive RAID-Z from scratch

Buy another 2TB drive, create a new vdev out of the 3 new drives, and add it to the zpool

Now, at first, the second option doesn’t sound too bad – until you realize that you’ve basically created a false RAID-Z2 (RAID-6), since you’ve got 2 parity disks. It’s false because if 2 disks fail in the same vdev, you’re cooked, but you could lose one in each and be fine. Also, you’re wasting money on an extra disk when you’re a simple home user who wants to scale in small parts.

Neither of these issues are a problem for larger deployments – they generally already have disk space for backups (or already have all the data backed up in the first place), or are building the entire thing from scratch to store future data. Buying extra disks isn’t a problem – they have money. Home users do not.

So, until this is possible, I’ll be using mdadm or a similar solution on OpenFiler or another Linux-based OS. This is a real shame; I really wanted to start using OpenIndiana.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if no one ever upgraded to Web 2.0? I mean, really, what have we gained. Here’s a list of things that I personally find really stupid about the phenomenon:

Lists

I think there’s a list for everything now. Everyone wants to be David Letterman. Here’s a lists of lists of things, found on Digg by searching for “10 things”:

Top 10 Things Americans Want but Can’t Have

Procrastination: Ten Things To Know

Things Everyone in IT Should Know

Things No One Gives Microsoft Credit For (But Should)

16 Names Of Things You Never Knew Had Names

Things Republicans want you to forget

Now, lists are all fine and dandy, but nowadays, most lists people put up are simply a ploy to get traffic, show more ads, and make money. Now, I have no problem with this at all – profits are the best incentive. But, really, it’s getting a little insane. Instead of lists, which are easy to skim, why not hide all your points in some real writing? Many of my friends and I, who are internet addicts, have realized that our reading speed and comprehension have suffered over the years due to the way we surf, which is skimming everything for that small chunk of information you want.

I finally found where Angband saves are stored in Ubuntu thanks to the helpful file listing it provides. It’s all in
/var/games/angband
, and the save directory looks like this:

root@rofl:/var/games/angband/save# ls -al
total 60
d---rwx--- 2 root games 4096 2008-01-01 23:57 .
drwxr-sr-x 9 root games 4096 2007-12-31 16:18 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 hank games 45651 2008-01-01 23:57 1000.Hank
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root games 47 2006-11-13 01:20 delete.me

The inside of
1000.Hank
is complete binary gibberish, but at least I can back it up now and move it between computers. This is so encouraging me to cheat. To find out more about angband, read this article.
